Games, Puzzles and Purposeful Practice
Why are they important?
Math games and puzzles give students meaningful, enjoyable contexts for doing math.
While playing, students deepen understandings, develop new strategies and increase computational fluency.
When choosing a math game, keep in mind the following considerations:
-
What mathematical ideas or strategies is the game developing?
-
Would the game be best played competitively or cooperatively?
-
Does the game emphasize thinking rather than speed?
Dynamic Geometry Software
GeoGebra is dynamic mathematics software for all levels of education that brings together geometry, algebra, spreadsheets, graphing, statistics and calculus in one easy-to-use package. GeoGebra is a rapidly expanding community of millions of users located in just about every country. GeoGebra has become the leading provider of dynamic mathematics software, supporting science, technology, and learning worldwide.
Procedural vs. Conceptual Knowledge
A student is less likely to forget concepts than procedures. If conceptual understanding is gained, then a student can reconstruct a procedure that may have been forgotten. On the other hand, if procedural knowledge is the limit of a student’s learning, there is no way to reconstruct a forgotten procedure.
Conceptual understanding in mathematics, along with procedural skill, is much more powerful than procedural skill alone.
Assessment For, As, and Of Learning
The ongoing assessment data collected informs our decisions about which learning experience to plan for, when those learning experiences take place, the context to explore the math, and with which group of students.

In The BWW
Math Web Resources
Our board have scoured the Internet in order to compile a comprehensive collection of resources for all math subjects, from the basics to calculus. If you want to improve your math skills, this is an excellent place to start.
Geometry and Spatial Sense
In general, people with strong spatial skills also tend to perform well in mathematics. Moreover, the strength of this connection does not appear to be limited to any one strand of mathematics. Researchers have found evidence to suggest that spatial thinking plays an important role in arithmetic, word problems, measurement, geometry, algebra and calculus.
Proportional Reasoning
The ability to think and reason proportionally is one essential factor in the development of an individual’s ability to understand and apply mathematics.
Do You Know
‘FOUR’ is the only number in the English language that is spelt with the same number of letters as the number itself.
The sum of the digits of the number added to 9 is always equal to the sum of the digits of the result
Example:
9 + 13 = 22 --> 1 + 3 = 4 and 2 + 2 = 4
9 + 155 = 164 --> 1 + 5 + 5 = 11 --> 1 + 6 + 4 = 11
111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321
123 - 45 - 67 + 89 = 100
